A great review of the FAmily Dollar Pharoahs. Only he somehow deduced
that they were Bad Checks. Believe me, had you seen the Bad Checks, you
would have known who they were. Hunter has never been shy about
introducing the band.

But, uh, the Bad Checks were the middle-aged ones with the chubby
plumber in the hawaiian shirt singing all the songs and doing that neat
trick where you throw the microphone stand out in front of you and then
tug it back, like magic. He probably also fell down a time or two.

Neat Bad Checks fact: if you memorized the stage-chatter from their Live
at 9:30 CD, you used to be able to predict, word for word, what Hunter
would say onstage. Now that they've got a few new songs, that may
actually no longer be the case.

Neater Bad Checks fact: Cliff Mann prefers the studio to the stage, yet
he's spent the past 15 years playing in punkrock bands. That's
dedication, and it also might give a hint as to why Pipe's Int'l Cement
is the local album of the year.

Anyway. shitty stuff:
1) the warm weather fucked my sinuses to the wall, so I spent 7 hours
today prostrate on the couch, in pain, which is why I'm not at Bo's or
wherever else I should be.

2) the news-to-mail gateway at UNC is royally fucked, meaning (a) some
stuff is just exploding on impact, and (b) other stuff is showing up
with the headers garbled six ways to sunday, meaning the "from" fields
are all screwy and nothing is correct.

So you ch-scene-sters are going to be getting a mess for a day or two,
I'm afeard.

Being that I'm feeling like crap, there's nothing new on the website
unless you haven't been there since I started the record stores page.
But since I haven't finished the record stores page, who really cares?
though there is a link to the "Best Buy Sucks" thread, or at least the
first 90% of it, so there you go. As if you didn't get too much of that
the first time.

But it does serve as a nice model for how the site *should* be
constructed, eventually. Lots of pointers to the archive. Yeah, right.
If the archive ever reappears.

Tomorrow: more stuff on food, pages for record stores, and the Great
Raleigh Thrift Guide. Plus: Jennyanykind pay a visit to the This Week
page, along with the Geezer Lake/ SWB/ Shek Ala Shek show. Not now, but
maybe by the time you finish reading this.

Ross.

p.s. to Ruby: I only ever ate at Margaret's once, and that was just
salsa. If you like it so much, write it up yrself. It'll wind up in the
right place soon enough.
