i have bought steinem's critique of _the people vs. larry flynt_ and i
will not be seeing it, though milos forman is a director i admire. to
paraphrase her, no one makes an elevating, feel-good film about nazis
marching in skokie, or david duke, and if they did, out-cry would on-go,
public-wise. we are so desensitized to the exploitation of women that we
shrug, chortle, whisper about fanaticism, and gape when someone suggests
that hustler and its ilk should be curtailed. not censored, mind.

her point is that larry flynt is not a banner-carrier for free-speech, but
a businessman who makes bucks by denigrating (and that is a soft-word)
women. her point is, more to the point and forgetting the money, that
larry flynt is sexist and misogynist to the core and this is expicit in
his publication. and no one makes an elevating, feel-good film about
adolph hitler.
unc-ch paid a lot of money for a sculpture to stand outside the entrance
to davis library. the finished product displayed certain sexist and racist
undertones -- for example, a male-student walking with a female-student
leaning against him, adoringly, and a tall, african-american male
balancing a basketball on his forefinger. the administration -- honestly,
i think -- evidenced a public bafflement at the outcry over these images
and, reluctantly, or, at least, slowly, determined to move the sculpture
to another spot (now in a green area near the poli-sci building). the tall
ball-balancing male is now gone. but the leaning female remains.
this is another fable.
