The so-called "retro swing" music culture has been making something of
an impact with the early-20s set in larger cities, from what I read. This
includes groups like Royal Crown Revue from LA and of course the local
Squirrel Nut Zippers.
We've seen a somewhat increased number of people in that age range
showing up at our bimonthly swing dances in the last year or two; I'm
wondering if there are other clubs or other bands than the SNZ whom they
patronize. And are any of them getting into the culture beyond listening to
the music? For example, in LA, there's apparently a contingent that goes to
the Derby every week dressed up in zoot suits and other 30s/40s
paraphernalia.
One reason I ask is that I'm in contact with another jump/swing band
from LA who might be able to put this area on their upcoming tour schedule.
We may try and get them for a swing dance, and I'd like to know which kind
of clubs to put them in touch with. There was (what looked to me like) good
turnout for the Royal Crown Revue engagement in Chapel Hill back in June,
but I don't remember the name of the little club on W. Franklin that they
played in.
