Ross, you know as well as I do that you & me were the first to buy tickets.

Jan 3.
* Flat Duo Jets and the Cashmere Jungle Lords (?) at Local 506. Everybody
knows what Flat Duo Jets are all about. Any info on the latter band?
Jan 4.
* Slugnut and Hatred at the Brewery. I have a friend who keeps pushing me to
see Slugnut. Says they're the best metal band he's ever seen live. I lamely
retort that I don't, as a rule, like metal. He calls me a wuss and pushes
me. Jerk.
Jan 8.
* MU330, Skavoovie and the Epitones, Missile Command at the Cradle and, on
the next night, the Scofflaws and Viskacity at the Brewery. MU330 is a
pretty typical Midwestern skacore band, though they're good for a couple
of hours of solid mindless fun. Skavoovie and the Epitones are all about
12 years old, but they've got a lot better grasp on the history of ska
and the Skatalite-esque early jazzy sound. Scofflaws don't stick in my
head, though I remember they do a lot of covers and are not as good as
the Pietasters. Viskacity is another young band, but they're local and
reportedly quite good.
Jan 10.
* Chicken Wire Gang and Mumblefish at the Berkeley. Chicken Wire Gang is
fun hillbilly stuff. Not super memorable, but maybe it was just a bad
night. The latter, ehhhh. Singer/songwriter with Hootie inflections,
which didn't really jazz me. The lead guy, Dave Spencer (?--I'm totally
blanking on it) was pretty good when I saw him solo with John Howie
and... damn, can't remember his name either. The guy from the Tremblers.
I have now officially lost all semblance of memory. But anyway, Howie
and nameless guy edged him out.
Jan 10.
* Jason and the Scorchers and the Backsliders at the Cradle. The Scorchers
kind of created "Americana"/alt.country/whatever, so now that it's big,
they might as well reap some rewards I guess. This show'll make your
inner "No Depression" fan wet his or her pants.
* Seely at the L&S. I just discovered, thanx to WXDU, that Seely is big
chunks of pop with slices of noise stuck in it. The three songs I heard
sounded like an Unrest/Rodan supergroup. La di da.
Jan 11.
* Lightnin' Wells and Big Boy Henry at the Berkeley. Apparently this is an
early show, so show early (badabing!).

Isn't Hootieguy (aaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!) producing this? Or am
I just imagining that Dick... it's coming to me... Hodges! is involved?
